Why it matters

The 30-year US Treasury inflation-protected real yield closed at 2.98% on 1 September 2026. In the 4,136 trading days since that series began in February 2010, it has closed at or above 3.00% on exactly seven — and all seven fell between 31 July and 21 August this year. The gold dots on the left panel are the entire history of a 3% thirty-year real rate.

The right panel is where that history goes next: 50,000 block-bootstrapped paths to the 31 December close, from which The Probability Desk reads a 55% probability the yield finishes at or above 3.00%.

The number matters because it is a discount rate, not a trade. A durable 3% thirty-year real yield is the highest risk-free, inflation-linked hurdle a long-horizon owner has been offered since 30-year TIPS were reintroduced in 2010 — and it arrives while investment-grade credit pays 81 basis points and high yield 266. It has already pushed the 100 largest US corporate pension plans to a $114bn surplus, because they discount liabilities at a market rate. It has done nothing for the 100 largest public plans, whose gap widened to $816bn in July, because they discount at an assumed return. Same rate. Opposite sign.
