How big is the Yale endowment in 2026?

Yale's endowment was worth $54.5 billion on June 30, 2026, Yale News reported on October 27, 2026. That is up $10.4 billion from $44.1 billion on June 30, 2025, and it is measured after the year's $2.2 billion of payments to the operating budget.

Among universities that have published fiscal 2026 results, that puts Yale third by size: behind Harvard ($68 billion, per Harvard Magazine) and Stanford's merged investment pool ($61.5 billion, per the Stanford Daily), and ahead of Princeton ($42.3 billion, per Princeton Alumni Weekly). What return did Yale earn in fiscal 2026?

Yale's endowment "earned a 26.3% investment return, net of fees," for the year ended June 30, 2026, "representing $11.3 billion in investment gains," according to Yale News. Chief Investment Officer magazine reported the same 26.3% figure the same day.

That is a sharp change from Yale's recent record. AI-CIO lists Yale's prior returns as 11.1% in fiscal 2025, 5.7% in FY2024, 1.8% in FY2023 and 0.8% in FY2022. In its fiscal 2025 release Yale said the portfolio had trailed public indices, citing leveraged buyouts and, more significantly, real estate.

Yale's own release does not give an asset-allocation breakdown or name the holdings that drove the 2026 result.

Yale's long-term record

Over the decade ending June 30, 2026, Yale's endowment returned 11.7% per annum. Yale says that exceeded:

  • the median 10-year return for college and university endowments by an estimated 1.6 percentage points a year; and
  • a typical 70/30 stock and bond portfolio by 2.7 points a year.

A year earlier, the 10-year figure was 9.4%, beating the endowment median by an estimated 1.4 points and a 70/30 portfolio by 2.2 points (Yale News, Oct. 24, 2025). AI-CIO reports Yale's target return as 8.25%.

How did Yale compare with its peers in 2026?

University FY2026 return Endowment, June 30, 2026 Source
Stanford (merged pool) 31.7% $61.5 billion Stanford Daily, Sept. 29, 2026
Penn 27.4% $31.1 billion Philadelphia Inquirer, Sept. 24, 2026
Harvard 27.1% $68 billion Harvard Magazine, Oct. 15, 2026
Yale 26.3% $54.5 billion Yale News, Oct. 27, 2026
Princeton 23.7% $42.3 billion Princeton Alumni Weekly, Oct. 16, 2026
Brown 19.6% $9.5 billion Brown University, Oct. 9, 2026
Dartmouth 17.5% about $10 billion AI-CIO, Oct. 22, 2026
MIT 10.3% $29.2 billion MIT News, Oct. 2, 2026

Yale's 26.3% sits in the middle of the large-endowment pack: just behind Harvard and Penn, ahead of Princeton and well ahead of MIT. As of October 30, 2026, Columbia and Cornell had not published fiscal 2026 results in the sources we checked.

How does the endowment fund Yale?

The endowment is Yale's largest single source of support. In fiscal 2026 its $2.2 billion distribution provided 35% of Yale's operating revenue and 62% of Yale College's budget, per Yale News. Over the past decade Yale has spent $16.3 billion from the endowment, equal to 64% of the endowment's value at the start of the period.

Yale stresses that about 75% of the endowment is "restricted," meaning a donor gave it for a specific purpose such as scholarships or research. And the 2026 windfall will not show up in spending at once: Yale says the gain enters the budget gradually, "starting with the fiscal year 2028 budget that begins on July 1, 2027."

What does the 8% endowment tax mean for Yale?

Yale says it is "newly subject to an 8% federal endowment tax," and that "the tax liability associated with this year's gain is roughly $900 million." Harvard Magazine reports that Harvard's rate on endowment investment gains also rises from 1.4% to 8% in fiscal 2027.

For Yale, a roughly $900 million liability on one year's gain is equivalent to about 40% of the $2.2 billion it distributed to the budget in fiscal 2026 — a reminder that headline returns overstate what is available to spend.

Who manages the Yale endowment?

The Yale Investments Office manages the endowment under chief investment officer Matt Mendelsohn, the only official quoted in Yale's fiscal 2026 release. "We are pleased to report this result, particularly at a time of uncertainty across the landscape of higher education," he said, adding that Yale is "mindful that any individual year's result only matters as a step toward the accomplishment of our long-term goals."

Yale's approach is the template for what is often called the endowment model. For how it works and how it differs from pension-fund approaches, see The Yale Endowment Model and The Endowment Model Explained.
